Johnstown Incline Plane

August 18, 2011

A few weeks ago some friends and I visited the Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown, Pa. While there, we had the chance to visit the incline plane, hailed as the steepest vehicular incline in the world. If you’ve never ridden one of these things, it’s basically a wooden boxcar on a railroad track headed straight up a mountain. At the top, an electric motor powers a wire-and-pully system to move the car up and down the hill. Not only does it carry people, but you can also have your car towed up (there’s a road that takes you to the top, but I imagine taking the incline is much more exciting, if not exactly cost effective at $6 per car). If you’re in the area, it’s worth checking out.
